The Effects of Cyclone Freddy on Malawi and JBFI's Relief Efforts
Since March 9th, 2023, Malawi has been experiencing devastating effects from Cyclone Freddy and heavy rainfall. This natural disaster has caused over 100,000 people to be displaced, with over 240 reported deaths and over 100 people missing.
The State President of Malawi has declared a state of disaster in the entire southern region of the country, as all nine administrative districts have been affected by the cyclone and heavy rains. This is considered to be the worst natural disaster in the history of Malawi.
The Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) has been feeding over 20,000 vulnerable children and working with over 200,000 women, many of whom are now homeless due to the natural disaster. The children have been forced to stay in makeshift camps and education has been greatly impacted.
JBFI has launched a rapid response program to address the needs of women and children affected by the cyclone and heavy rains. Their focus is on providing nutritious food, clothing, and shelter to save lives.
JBFI is also committed to preserving the dignity and rights of women in the camps and providing safe spaces for affected children to continue their education.
JBFI is seeking support from individuals and institutions to help with their relief efforts. They are looking to provide dignity packs and clothing to women and safe spaces for affected children to continue their education. They believe that together, they can save lives and bring back meaning to those affected by this natural disaster.
